Although all- and four-wheel drive send power to each wheel, four-wheel drive differs from all-wheel drive in several ways, the most notable of which is that four-wheel drive is typically more appropriate for off-road situations.
Many vehicles are offered with more than one kind of drivetrain, including the 2017 RAM 1500. While the new RAM 1500 comes with standard rear-wheel drive, the truck is also eligible for two four-wheel drive systems, both of which have a transfer case and low-range gearing.
Four-wheel drive normally has to be engaged by a driver, but one of the four-wheel drive systems that you can get on a 2017 RAM 1500 automatically switches between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive depending on the conditions you’re driving in. The truck’s other four-wheel drive system is more traditional, meaning you’ll have to engage it manually if you want to use four-wheel drive.
